Always tell someone where you’re going and when you plan to return
If you ever become lost or injured, someone will be able to notify the proper authorities about where to locate you.
Beginners, short day hike
Lightweight backpack with the following:
- Phone: plus charging accessory
- Water bottle: pack accordingly for the time you’ll be outdoors
- Navigation: map, compass, altimeter, GPS device, personal locator beacon (PLB) or satellite messenger
- Flashlight/headlamp: plus extra batteries
- Sun protection: sunglasses, sun-protective clothes and sunscreen
- First aid: including foot care and insect repellent (as needed)
- Fire: matches, lighter, tinder and/or stove
- Snacks/food: Beyond the minimum expectation
- Extra water: Beyond the minimum expectation
- Light Jacket: Appropriate jacket for the weather expected.
- Trekking poles/walking stick: Great for helping to make it up hills and check for snakes.
- Hiking boots/shoes: Wear boots/shoes appropriate for your hike, ankle support is important.
More advanced, day hike
Lightweight backpack with the following:
- Phone: plus charging accessory
- Water bottle: pack accordingly for the time you’ll be outdoors
- Navigation: map, compass, altimeter, GPS device, personal locator beacon (PLB) or satellite messenger
- Flashlight/headlamp: plus extra batteries
- Sun protection: sunglasses, sun-protective clothes and sunscreen
- First aid: including foot care and insect repellent (as needed)
- Knife: plus a gear repair kit
- Fire: matches, lighter, tinder and/or stove
- Shelter: carried at all times (can be a light emergency bivy)
- Extra food: Beyond the minimum expectation
- Extra water: Beyond the minimum expectation
- Light Jacket: Appropriate jacket for the weather expected.
- Extra clothes: Beyond the minimum expectation to keep warm if you must sleep overnight.
- Trekking poles/walking stick: Great for helping to make it up hills and check for snakes.
- Hiking boots/shoes: Wear boots/shoes appropriate for your hike, ankle support is important.
